Were there any challenges?
In part it is a challenge to come in as a guest to work in a large mill area with production continuing as normal. And, in part, the area is situated on former lake bed. The latter caused the ground to move, particularly when the 12,000 piles were to be set out. We really had to have our eye on everything, including the ground itself and other production.

How did we resolve this?
Maintaining a constructive dialogue and a favourable mood at the site meant that we encountered no problems at all working with production running. Instead, the challenge lay in charting the ground movements during the setting out process. To analyse the movement patterns and plan future work based on those, we developed a comprehensive monitoring programme that was applied daily.
Our work for BillerudKorsnäs has been continuing more or less around the clock since March 2017. We have had a total of 50 surveying consultants from Exact on site.

The length of the project is 4.1km including 2km of tunnels and approx. 150m of bridgework. The project is worth around 400 MNOK (Million Norwegian Kroner).

Exact is responsible for providing all surveying services on site, including; survey leader, site surveyors, tunnel and machine control. In addition, Exact carries out as-built measurements, geometric control measuring, mass calculations and delivery of final documentation to the relevant authorities.

Exact is involved with survey services across the project. This includes survey stakeout, as built measurements, geometric control and calculations and responsibility for producing end documentation for delivery to the relevant authorities. In addition, Exact has been engaged to establish a survey control network across the entire project.

The complex ESS construction project proceeds under an agreement that allows for fully integrated cooperation. “This is a project of an enormous scale for a very large organisation, so we have naturally had to adapt our ordinary work routines,” says Håkan Nilsson, an EXACT consultant working on the ESS construction project. “It’s an exciting endeavour, and I feel fortunate having the chance to collaborate with so many clever, friendly people.”

The ESS facility can be likened to a giant microscope. Neutrons will be fired at different materials so they can be analysed in detail. It is anticipated that future research conducted at ESS will contribute to breakthroughs in medicine, environmental science, climatology, communication and transportation.

Sweden and Denmark are to host the ESS, but the pan-European research facility is being co-financed by a number of EU countries who will all draw benefit from it. Along with the planned MAX IV facility, ESS will form a hub in Europe’s research infrastructure. ESS is expected to open in 2019 with its 22 experiment stations in full operation by 2025. Annually, ESS is expected to draw 2,000-3,000 researchers from across the world.

The SRV-developed REDI project in the metro quarter of Kalasatama, Helsinki starts with the construction of a shopping centre. The shopping centre and parking facility is scheduled to open in autumn 2018. EXACT are currently contracted for infrastructural work.

Measured by floor area this project will make Iso Omena one of Finland’s largest shopping centres. The project started early 2013 and should be completed by mid 2016.

The metro station in Otaniemi resides in the heart of the Aalto University campus. The main entrance opens straight towards the main building of the campus, designed by Alvar Aalto. EXACT are still part of the construction phase. The project started early 2013 and is scheduled for completion later this year. Aalto University station is built by YIT.

The project consists of four underground floors and seven floors above ground. The geometry of the new building is very complex and demanding from a structural point of view. Sloped and skewed structures caused huge forces, which lead to interesting challenges for structure and connection design.
